My First Skool (MFS)
2022-11-17

Introduction

My First Skool (MFS) is a long-established early childhood education center and the largest government kindergarten among two government kindergartens in Singapore. It was established in 1977, and there are more than 100 education centers all over the island of Singapore nowadays. Thus, MFS has extensive experience in preschool education. It is also qualified by Singapore Preschool Accreditation Framework (SPARK) as a high-quality preschool education center. (*SPARK: Singapore Preschool Accreditation Framework is a core evaluation to improve preschool education quality in Singapore.)

It is worth mentioning that MFS integrates childcare and education into its education system, unlike domestic kindergartens. Not only that, it provides a variety of preschool services for children of different ages such as baby care, early childhood care, playgroups, nursery schools, etc.

At the same time, MFS implements bilingual education (English and mother tongue) in daily teaching to provide a set of continuous development environments for children from infancy.

Class Size

Currently, MFS has more than 150 centers in Singapore that are convenient for students, regardless of their residential address. Most of the education centers are community-centric, providing high-quality and affordable childcare services to the students.

Teaching Environment and Qualification

At present, My First Skool has more than 1,900 early childhood teachers in Singapore. These teachers have passed the training requirements of the Singapore Early Childhood Development Agency, and more than 93% of them have received professional-level preschool education training. Possessing the ability and knowledge required for preschool education is one of the most crucial prerequisites for serving children, and MFS has done a great job in this regard.

In addition, these experts have rich practical experience and formulate reasonable and effective education plans for MFS research. At the same time, MFS teachers will also be trained to continuously improve classroom quality.

Curriculum Highlights

MFS focuses on a curriculum that encourages children to participate in activities they are interested in to impart skills and knowledge to children. Its curriculum promotes the development of children in 6 aspects: language and writing, numeracy, world discovery, motor skill development, aesthetics and creative expressions, and social emotional development.

In a specific implementation, MFS arranges different curriculum according to the needs of children of different age groups:

1. Skool-Educare@, namely childcare education

(Suitable for children aged 2 months to 3 years old)

The course emphasizes the love for children and provides a safe environment for children to explore the world and express themselves with the dedication of the teachers. Along the way, children will continue to learn sensory, motor skills, and self-care skills.

For example:

  • Provide babies (2-18 months) with sufficient opportunities to explore and build knowledge through various sensory activities, such as playing with dough and paint, etc;

  • Encourage young children (18 months to 3 years old) to observe the characteristics of surrounding objects through their senses. For example, to perceive the durian object by asking about the taste of durian;

  • Help young children learn more sports skills, MFS also launched an indoor sports program— "Kids move";

  • For team learning, young children would sit together and take turns sharing resources to promote collaboration.

2. Skool-Ready@, namely preschool education

(Suitable for children aged 4 to 6 years old)

MFS provided science-based courses to help children observe this "unusual" world through specific and interesting learning experiences.

This program is aligned with the Ministry of Education Preschool Program principles:

  1. Cultivate children' knowledge, literacy, and mathematical skills

  2. Cultivate children's interest in learning and make them happy to observe, classify, ask questions and guess;

  3. Friendly, helpful and learn to cooperate;

  4. Cultivate children's ability to accept challenges and changes for the future.

3. Skool-aCe@

(Suitable for children aged 18 months to 6 years old)

This curriculum aims to help children learn Chinese systematically. Through learning literature, songs, nursery rhymes, poems and games, children gradually learn Mandarin, recognize words, learn to read and express creativity in writing.

4. Enrichment Classes

In addition to the curriculum above, MFS provides many enrichment classes such as the abacus and mental arithmetic, creative dance, speech, and drama. Do take note that the class schedules are not fixed; therefore, parents may contact MFS to know the class schedule and arrangements.

Why choose MFS?

1. Lower tuition fees

Tuition fees at MFS are relatively low compared to other childcare centers. For example, the monthly tuition fee of MFS’s kindergarten course is S$700-900, while the monthly fee of an international kindergarten is around S$1500. It can be said that as a government school, MFS is very cost-effective.

2. High approval rate & possibility to apply for dependant pass

To study in Singapore as a young child, the parents need to apply for a dependent pass. As a government school, the approval rate of student passes is much higher than a private kindergarten (basically 100%), and the time is longer. After admission, either the mother or grandmother can apply for a dependent pass.

3. Conducive to the future development of children

The biggest problems faced by many foreign children who study in Singapore middle and high schools are 1) language problems (English is difficult to keep up with); 2. it is difficulty integrating into the environment. Usually, the later the child goes to study abroad, the longer the transition period is required to integrate into the new environment and language, which is why parents choose to apply for studying abroad in their children's early childhood. In Singapore, learning in such a bilingual Western-style education environment from early childhood, children are basically on the same starting line as local children.

In addition, after completing preschool education from MFS, children can directly enter the first grade of primary school in Singapore and do not need to take the AEIS exam.

In general, MFS is a preschool education school worthy of your consideration in terms of facilities and curriculum.
