Introduction
NEXUS International School (Singapore) was established in 2007 by Taylor’s Schools, with a total area of 44,000 square meters. It offers education at the kindergarten, primary and secondary levels for students aged 3-18. In order to promote inclusiveness and a multinational environment in NEXUS, the school currently has over 1200 students from more than 50 countries. 16% of the students are from Britain, and the rest are from the United Kingdom, the United States, South Korea, Australia, European countries, Japan, India and China.
NEXUS International school enrolled its first batch of students in January 2007 and has been steadily increasing until now. Over the years, it has constantly improved its teaching and learning system to meet the educational needs of the children of Singapore expatriates.
To form a better learning and teaching environment, NEXUS works alongside the architects to design a dream school for the staff and students. The school facilities include fully air-conditioned classrooms, music room, art room, computer room, science laboratories (physics, biology, chemistry), drama auditorium, sports facilities (Olympic-sized swimming pool, indoor gymnasium, football field, basketball court, badminton court), Children's playground, library, canteen and etc.
Moreover, language is crucial for an international school, this is often the first time children experience a language that may not be their mother tongue. At Nexus, the staff from across the globe can speak a range of languages and are qualified to teach English to second-language learners. This is to help the learners to communicate and build confidence. For example, Chinese students can choose Chinese as their first language and English as their second language.
At NEXUS International School Singapore, the founder put a stronghold that a warm and friendly environment promotes the development of students' personalities. Thus, the school adopted an inquiry-based teaching approach that encourages students to ask questions and explore the world around them, guiding the children to learn in a way that best suits their unique learning styles.
Curriculum
NEXUS provides courses from kindergarten to high school which include the International Primary School Diploma Program (IBPYP), the national curriculum uniformly stipulated by the British Ministry of Education, the British Cambridge International General Secondary School Course (IGCSE), and the International Baccalaureate IBDP course. From kindergarten to sixth grade, the school will provide Apple computers and iPad platforms for the students to access different courses for different learning levels and for the teachers to carry out hierarchical teaching. In the teaching of senior grades, students of different levels will be divided into different groups and different projects will be set up. The main teaching language is English but most of the students can take their mother tongue as their first or second language.
To consider the welfare and feelings of non-English-speaking students, NEXUS provides all-around counseling for students from non-English-speaking countries. NEXUS also sets up a special department in the school to help students who have difficulty in language learning or whose level cannot reach the level of their peers. Furthermore, the teachers will provide on-site tutoring for students with learning difficulties, to keep the students on the learning progress in the shortest possible time.
Nursery
At Nexus International School, Early Childhood begins with Nursery and Kindergarten. During this critical time, children begin to read, write and build the foundations of numerical and scientific understandings. To achieve this strong foundation, the courses offered are child-centered and can meet the individual needs of children and the development of abilities and interests.
Preschool / Primary School (Grade 1 to Grade 6)
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme is focused on this stage. It is an interdisciplinary international program that promotes the holistic development of children. Not only academic strengths, the social, physical, emotional and cultural needs of the students can be developed and met.
Application Requirements
The academic year begins in August and admissions are made throughout the academic year. Grades 11 and 13 do not accept admission transfer applications while students in other grades can transfer their admission based on existing academic qualifications and the admission quota. Students can take an online English entrance test, and the school will decide whether to enroll based on the test results. The students will then be placed in the suitable grade after admission.
